Course Overview

Learn spiritual transformation coaching: go beneath the presenting issue. Recognize where clients are in their spiritual journey and partner with them in God’s formative work, without rushing, fixing, or directing.

Using the stages of faith in The Critical Journey, you’ll spot indicators of growth, transition, or struggle, hear striving and grace beneath faithful-sounding language, and ask questions suited to each stage. You’ll also practice staying present when a client is in a season you can’t fix.

Through the Cycle of Works and the Cycle of Grace, you’ll learn to notice pressure and performance without creating shame. Live discussion and coaching practice help you apply ICF Core Competencies in spiritually formative conversations.

What makes this different? This course forms the coach as well as informs the coach. Led by Kim Avery, PCC, you’ll reflect on your own life with God while building a coaching presence rooted in patience, discernment, and trust.

You’ll leave with a personal vision of a flourishing life with God and the confidence to coach clients toward who God created them to be.

Is This Course Right for You?

This is formation, not just information. You’ll examine your own life with God while practicing how to coach others through theirs.

Coaches Whose Clients Go Deeper Than Goals

Your clients bring decisions and transitions, but you sense God is working at a deeper level. You want to listen for it without steering the conversation.

Coaches Who Feel the Pull to Fix

You’re tempted to offer spiritual answers too quickly, especially when a client is stuck or hurting. You want to stay present and trust the process.

Coaches Seeking Their Own Renewal

You pour into others and may be running on empty. You want to examine your own journey so you can coach from grace, not striving.

What You’ll Accomplish in This Course

Every session pairs teaching with reflection and coaching practice, so you apply what you learn to your own life and your clients’ lives.

  • Map the seven stages of faith in The Critical Journey, from Recognition of God to Life of Love.

  • Identify the characteristics, invitations, and challenges of each stage.

  • Recognize indicators of where a client is experiencing growth, transition, or struggle.

  • Distinguish coaching from advising, directing, teaching, rescuing, and problem-solving in spiritual conversations, using the ICF Core Competencies as your standard.
  • Detect the Cycle of Works (striving, performance, conditional worth) in yourself and your clients.

  • Practice coaching questions and postures suited to each stage, including coaching at the Wall, while demonstrating the ICF competencies.
  • Apply the Cycle of Grace to help clients receive acceptance without turning grace into another performance goal.

  • Create a personal vision of a flourishing life with God as your final integration project.

Course Breakdown

The course moves from foundations through each stage of faith, then closes with integration. You’ll study each stage as a coach and reflect on it as a person.

Weeks 1-2: Orientation & Foundations

Begin the journey with an overview of the stages of faith. Explore what makes spiritual formation coaching distinct from outcome-driven coaching, and examine your own assumptions about growth.

Weeks 3-5: Early Stages & the Cycles of Works and Grace

Study Recognition of God and Life of Discipleship. Learn to spot the Cycle of Works in yourself and your clients, then practice coaching from the Cycle of Grace.

Weeks 6–7: Productive Life & Journey Inward

Honor fruitful service while noticing how it can quietly become heavy. Coach clients whose familiar answers no longer seem sufficient, without rushing them back to clarity.

Week 8: The Wall

Coach in the storm. Practice presence and patience when there’s nothing to fix, and notice the pull to explain or rescue.

Weeks 9–10: Beyond the Wall & Integration

Explore Journey Outward and Life of Love, then share your final project on what a flourishing life with God looks like for you.

Required Course Materials

One book anchors the whole course. It serves as your guide to the stages of faith and a reference you’ll return to in your coaching practice.
